My Favorite Fake Experience found in the Literature was the JW who witnessed to a businessman on a train. The businessman took the truth book and threw it out the window. The book sailed thru the air and hit a man who was going to commit suicide. He read the book instead and became a JW!
You just can't make it up - oh wait you can!

Really. Encouraging a senior to give away their money when they don't have enough for themselves is elder abuse.

"Do Religions Today Feed or Fleece The Flock?" March 22, 1988
by days of future passed ini pulled this magazine out of a box of "never placed and never will be" from the 1980's and 90's.
of course it is hypocritical (like most articles) but especially now since the jw religion has their own channel.. it is an article about tele evangelists - the four prominent ones.
it takes up 3 1/2 pages and it is full of the misdeeds and greed of these preachers.

Yes fleecing and sometimes eating.
Ezekiel 34:2-4 New International Version (NIV)
2 “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Woe to you shepherds of Israel who only take care of yourselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock? 3 You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock. 4 You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally.
You see, the WT does follow what's in the bible

by krismalone inthe phrase “pray now, pay later” appeared in a headline of the philadelphia “inquirer” in reporting on a church experiment due to go into effect shortly.

I remember being at a two day local assembly after finding out that the WT was not what they said they were. I said to my ex friend witness, "Pretty soon they are going to be like the money changers in the temple and let you use a credit card" My ex friend kinda laughed (in that "I don't want to know the truth" way) and said "Well that's a good thing because sometimes I don't have the money on me or a check"
What did I see the very next assembly? Money changers in the lobby. One brother manning the credit card charger had a sheepish smile on his face which said it all.

I pulled this magazine out of a box of "never placed and never will be" from the 1980's and 90's. Of course it is hypocritical (like most articles) but especially now since the JW religion has their own channel.
It is an article about tele evangelists - the four prominent ones. It takes up 3 1/2 pages and it is full of the misdeeds and greed of these preachers. The style of writing is quite different than a lot articles at the time and even of ones today. If you ever had read the "Golden Age" (?) one of the early mags they put out, the style is similar. It's very tabloid and catty.
"As it was in the days of ancient Israel, so it often is today: Many of the religious shepherds feed themselves and starve their flocks. Last year the television evangelists were on center stage, zealously fleecing the sheep."
Not that the WT is doing that...
From the Bakers, Oral Roberts, Falwell and Swaggart, the article goes into the scandals and how much money was accrued. But it takes an interesting turn on page 7. Instead of it all being painted as bad - the great amounts of money being "used" for religion - the WT oks that.
"It is true that "all the trappings of modern television evangelism" are a long way from the methods of Jesus. But it is also true that times have changed. To preach worldwide to millions involves the use of modern facilities and efficient organizations, and it takes large sums of money. Even so, the basics of Jesus' way of life remain the the model for Christians. The values and principles that he laid down are still the only pathway for Christians today. -1Peter 2:21
Some of those principles follow: 'You received truth free, give free. Don't be anxious about material things. Seek first the kingdom. More happiness in giving than in receiving..... True Christianity has not changed: only the facilities for spreading it have.
It is not the huge amounts of money that are involved that are objectionable. It takes millions to preach worldwide. Money is not evil. It is the love of money that is the root of all kinds of evils. It is the ways of getting the money -- the pleas, the gimmicks, the begging, the deceit, the lies -- that are evil. It is the fraudulent extraction of it from the poor by con games that's evil. And collected for one purpose, then used for another, for personal enrichment -- that's embezzlement..."
I've got a box of the these "spiritual treasures" but am contemplating putting them in the recycling bin. No witness will ever be convinced even if you put them in their hands that the WT is shady.

At a Sunday meeting, people will come up and greet you and try to find out if you are studying - if you would like to study etc. They will be friendly and help you find a seat and make sure that you are able to follow along with a tablet - we used to have study magazines and books but now I think it's mostly electronic.
First a song, then a talk. Then another song and then a study of their current magazine article. When they study the article, someone will read a paragraph, the conductor will ask the question for that paragraph and one or two people will raise their hand and be called on to answer. (they don't want to be asked questions by the way so don't raise your hand to get them answered) That goes on until they finish the article. Another song and then it ends.
Then you will probably be asked how you liked it and encouraged to attend more meetings or arrange a study. If you want to escape, just say thanks and that you have to go somewhere at a certain time and you have to leave. Fast.

I was raised in the Jehovah's witness religion. My mother joined because she wanted to be young forever. They told her she would never go old and die. She would be able to see her family that had died. My sisters and I were told we would never have to worry about graduating school, getting a job or getting married because God's new order would come and we would live on a paradise earth.
They said that 1975 would see that promise come true.
I am 63 and my mother is 83 now. My mother still believes that she will get to paradise - except she knows she will die - since they have changed their story, she has gone thru a terrible depression.
I know now, that this religion like many others, makes their living promising a future that is always in the distance but never realized.
I'm sorry about your Grandfather. I miss my Grandma too.
